• Team Membership

Our mission is to provide a supportive community-oriented training environment for competitive runners that will help them reach their peak performance potential.

Team 5am is currently limited to a total of 40 athletes. The team size is limited in order to provide athletes with a level of personalized coaching and training that is not possible in larger community groups or teams. Further, a close, supportive community is one of the things that makes Team 5am so incredible. We want to keep our group at a size where every individual knows each other and feels connected to each other.

Team membership includes all the benefits below. As a team member you will have access to the weekly training plan and are able to participate in all runs and workouts. In addition to our general annual membership, we offer two Training Cycles that can be added to your membership which offer a more personalized, more in-depth training experience.

If you choose to participate in the Training Cycles, you will also have access to the training plan for the full cycle and receive personalized guidance from the coaches including plan modifications and workout modifications to meet the needs of your individual race and fitness. Membership without participation in a Training Cycle is best for team members who:
    1) Are not actively training competitively for a race; 2) Are injured; 3) Are taking a break from running – traveling a lot, family needs, just burned out or 4) Are focusing on something completely outside of half-marathon/marathon training

The Training Cycles offer some personalized adjustments to plans but are not able to provide detailed coaching including week to week modification based on your personal fitness, strengths, and external life factors. • Eligibility for Membership

As a competitive team that focuses on high-intensity and high-mileage running, it’s essential for runners to be at a baseline fitness level in order to train safely and get the best experience from the team. We welcome all runners of adult age (18+) and gender who meet the following before participating in a team trial membership:

    • Be training for an upcoming race for a goal of a half-marathon time of 1:35 or faster; or a marathon of 3:15 or faster

    • Running at least 30-40 miles a week on average for half-marathon goals; 40-50 for marathoners

    • Currently able to run a long run of at least 10 miles regularly

    • Currently able to maintain a pace on runs classified as easy or recovery at faster than 9 minutes per mile for 6 or more consecutive miles 3-4 times a week

    • Currently able to regularly run 3-4 consecutive miles at a picked-up pace of 7min 45 sec per mile or faster.

    • Have completed or have the goal to complete a half-marathon or marathon in the next year

If you're not yet at this level in your training, we encourage you to work up to this before trying out the team. Our coach, Jenn Lewis, can do individual coaching and help create an individual training plan to help increase your mileage or speed (see team website) or the following Eugene community run support is available to help you train.

    • RunHub NW’s run club Big Timber: individuals of all levels, training at a variety of distances. One coached workout a week; general membership and season training plans available. https://runhubnw.com/big-timber-running-club/

      • RunHub also offers an all-level community run on Wednesdays at 6pm every week

    • Eugene FrontRunners: A recently started run/walk club for LGBTQAA individuals and allies. Open to all levels. Meets for a community run every Monday at 6pm at Amazon trailhead at the South Eugene Track.

    • Eugene Running Company: Offers an all-level community run on Mondays at 6pm every week. ERC also has a half-marathon/marathon training group that does weekly long-runs on Saturdays.

    Trying out the Team:

To try out the team, we will invite you to run with the team for a trial 4-week period. After 4 weeks, you'll meet with the coaches, Lonn and Jenn, and you can discuss together whether the Team is a good fit for you and your goals. In order to be considered for the team, we require you to run at least 4 workouts (Tuesday/Thursday runs) with the team and at least one run a week during the 4-week trial period. We require this because we think it takes at least this much time to get an idea of what the team is about and whether the team and training style is a good fit for you and the Team.
